Hope Solo - The American Dream

Many readers may be looking at this post thinking who is Hope Solo? But since the Olympics just happened, many of you may have a better idea of who she is.

Now do you know? She is the goalie for the US women's soccer team! Katie and I go back and forth on a constant basis about if she is hot or not (I think she is, Katie tends to disagree) but regardless, she is just on fire.

At 31, Hope has had my dream...playing soccer for a living. I wouldn't want to be a goalie by any means, but at least she gets to be outside, on a field, doing what she loves every day. Is that not the American dream?

How many of you are living the American dream? A husband/wife, a family, a dog, cat, and a house with a white picket fence and a nice backyard? Wait- is that really the American dream these days? I have watched enough House Hunters on HGTV to know that it isn't. I can't believe how many people could care less if they have grass to play in!!

So what is the American dream? We may all have a different outlook but I think we can all agree on one aspect. It is the freedom to do whatever we want, go where we want to go, be who we want to be. And as many times as I have said that it is impossible to be a child and say, "I want to be _____(insert profession) when I grow up" because guess what? The chances of you getting that job are slim to none. I was the, "I want to be a sports anchor when I grow up" child. And then I did go to college for radio and TV and guess what! I spent almost a year sending out DVD after DVD to tv station and didn't even get one call back. Talk about the American dream getting crushed. But as an American, I know I have the option to change my mind so here I am now, working my big girl job, with good people, just making it work. Hope gives me hope that maybe someday I'll be fully satisfied with my second choice of what I want to be when I grow up.

What did you want to be when you were little? Did you grow up to be that? Let me know because I am really interested to see how many of you followed through on your dreams.
