Men and Their Complaints

On the radio a few weeks ago the hosts were discussing an article on eHarmony’s website about dating advice. The article is written by Grant Langston and is titled, “Men’s Ten Biggest Complaints About Women.”

I thought it was pretty interesting and funny because all of the complaints, in my opinion, are true – whether I want to openly admit it or not. When you read this you may swear up and down that you don’t do these things, but truth is, most/many of us do. I will be first to admit.

1. You want us to change, and then lose respect for us when we do.

The author gives an example of his friend who married someone who was in a band. The woman was a bit threatened by all of the attention her husband received and told him that she hated he was in a band and wish he’d just quit. When he quit the band she told her friends, “I’m a little less attracted to him because he quit the band, and just did what I asked. Now he just hangs out at home.”  This may be a very specific example but it can easily be related to things I have done in the past. For example, not liking a boyfriend’s job and complaining to him about it. When he quits, I complain that he is out of work.

2. You have a complicated set of double standards.

We like having an equal relationship and having say in things we do in relationships. But when our significant others take us out and ask what we’d like to do tonight we get angry that they haven’t taken charge of the situation and plan a nice evening out. The list could go on and on for examples of when us ladies do this. I hate to admit that I definitely have double standards.

3. You don’t understand and/or like our need for alone time.

I certainly don’t like it or understand it. We don’t understand why they don’t want to spend more time with us and why they want to do things on their own like play golf or go out with the guys.

4. You fixate on what we’re thinking, when you should be watching what we’re doing.

I don’t like the explanation although the author has a good point. He says, we ask “what are you thinking? And men say, “Nothing.” We assume it must be a lie and decide that the man isn’t willing to communicate with us. The author goes on to say that the problem is, this is the wrong question to ask. Men are action-oriented. We should watch what they are doing instead of asking. If the guy is coming home late every night, they aren’t happy at home. If they are not calling back even though they said “I love you”, they don’t love you.

5. You like to play coy.

We tend to play the “I don’t care game” with men. If we care, they want to know! The author says, “You think we like the chase? Perhaps. You think we like guessing whether we’re wasting our time? No.”

6. You have a tendency to be critical.

We really do tend to be critical at times. There is not much to say about this one, it is true, unfortunately.

7. You use your emotions as a weapon.

It is not that we mean to – well sometimes. But I know that we sometimes turn on the tears to get our way. Hey, if it works, why not?

8. You’re always looking down the road.

It is in our nature to do this. We tend to think about the next major step in life. Men tend to think much shorter term.

9. Your expectations are set by Hollywood and sky high.

We know that our man is not going to be like the George Clooney or Brad Pitt in the movie, but in our heart we want it. It is not our fault we have been fed a fantasy about romance and passion that only happens in the movies.

10. You see us as projects you can ‘fix.’

We meet a man, we like them, we date them, we marry them. Somewhere along the line we see the rough edges and want to round them off.

So, do you agree with these complaints? Are you guilty of all of them or only some?

Ladies: Need I Remind You that Valentine's Day is Less than a Week Away

Even though my husband does not believe in Valentine's Day, I still end up buying him something little just to say that I love you and always thinking of you. Sometimes it's hard to find something small that doesn't cost a fortune, something that he will actually like or even use.

I would like to provide my fellow ladies with some easy gift ideas that every man will like. These gifts will work for boyfriends (new or old), fiances, husbands (again, new or old) or even your dad or best guy friend.

  • Brownie Heart: Go to the dollar store and buy a giant heart cookie cutter. If you can find 3 that are different sizes, go for that one. If not, one is fine. Pick up some red, white or pink icing and some sprinkles. Don't forget the brownie mix and ingredients! Now you can make a huge brownie heart and decorate it for your loved one. Guys ALWAYS like brownies...even the picky ones who don't like chocolate.
  • Fun Dip: Yup...I said it. Fun Dip. It isn't something that you can't always find, but I found it in a 24 pack that was actually meant for kids Valentine cards. He'll love it!
  • Cigars: Not my favorite gift, but he likes them. It is like a hall pass to doing something that I really don't like.
  • Special beer: This gift is now off the books for me, but for those of you who don't own a bar or distributor, get him a special case of beer that he may not choose himself. He will appreciate you buying him alcohol...I promise.
  • Finally, you can just go simple and buy a card. And yes a 99 cent card, or even the 2 for $1 cards from the Dollar Store are perfectly fine because all that matters is that you show you care. If he cares, he may even keep it forever!
Good luck on your Valentine's shopping! And don't wait until the last minute - just like Christmas, everything will be gone!

Men and Their Periods!

It must really be nice to be a man…to do, say and behave any way they want.  They even get their periods.  Granted, it’s not all fun and games as us ladies know but come on…can’t we just have one thing that’s all ours?!  Not to mention the fact that although we can get moody during "Aunt Flow’s" visit, we pick ourselves up by our boot straps and keep trucking along!
So the last few days have been a bit trying with my hubby.  Don’t get me wrong, I love him dearly but when he gets in bad mood, he really gets in a bad mood. ..Italian style!   It started last week when he got upset with me because I didn’t want to stay down at the bar and have a few drinks with him before I went home.  Now, let me put my day in to perspective for all you readers.  I worked eight hours at my “big girl” job, came home, changed and then had to be down at the bar to work another four hours.  He napped all day.  He showed up at the bar around 9ish and just disappeared in the basement to get some paperwork done.  I finished work around 10 p.m. and by then, I was beat.  I went down to say hi and bye and then…he just went crazy!  He started saying that I don’t like spending time with him and I don’t care about his feelings…blah, blah, blah!  Really dude?  I swear his behavior mirrored that of a teenage girl on her period!  I mean, who just worked 12 hours and who just napped and played video games all day?
Saturday, I thought things were looking up.  He was in a great mood, making jokes, smiling and then… it all went to crap again.  By the end of a very busy night at our bar, the staff (who we love) royally messed up the register and credit card machine.  Granted, it was a really stupid mistake but it was stupid busy and in the rush, they hit a few wrong buttons.  My husband has very little patience for this sort of stuff (even though he’s guilty of having done it himself) and it took every bit of energy that I had left to keep him calm and to figure out the problem myself.  Keep in mind, I had the night off and I was more than a little tipsy!  But surprise, surprise, us ladies have to do it all right?
By Sunday, he was just angry at the world and I was just getting more and more frustrated!  There’s only so much I can take before my fuse runs out.  We went to his parent’s house for dinner and to watch the football game (btw...I can’t believe we lost to the Ravens again) and by Monday, I just decided I had enough.  So I left the house and actually started, and put a nice dent in, my Christmas shopping.  By the time I got home, his “period” finally ended.  He sat me down and apologized for being such a douche over the last few days.  He even cleaned the house and ordered dinner for us.
Thank god it’s all over.  All I can say is that it must have been a very “heavy” month for him and hopefully it won’t rear its ugly head for another six months!

My Words of Wisdom:  Most of the time, men act like children.  It's just their nature.  We as ladies have to be the strong ones and no when to pick our battles.  It wasn't worth me getting all pissed off at him.  I tried to cheer him up and when I realized I was at my breaking point...I just went out for a little retail therapy.  I knew his foul mood would eventually pass and it wasn't worth it to me to put any more heat on the fire when I knew...he was just on his period!
